What an incredible week, August 19-23, 2024, we had at SOS Detsko Selo in Madzari in Skopje! Our young innovators, all of whom are beneficiaries of SOS Detsko Selo – children without parental care – embarked on a journey of exploration, experimentation, and creation, making this summer camp an unforgettable adventure.

The Macedonia2025 STEAM Summer Camp Initiative is dedicated to nurturing STEM skills in children from socially vulnerable groups across Macedonia. This week, we provided children from SOS Detsko Selo in Skopje, aged 9-11, with the opportunity to engage in a 5-day camp filled with hands-on learning in STEAM areas, fueled by play, creativity, and discovery.

Here’s a recap of our thrilling journey:
🚀 Day 1: Chemical Reactions
Our budding scientists launched the week with awe-inspiring experiments like dry ice sublimation, elephant toothpaste, and the dancing corn experiment.
💧 Day 2: Water Cycle, Clouds, and Tornadoes
We immersed ourselves in the wonders of the water cycle, explored various types of clouds, and even created our own tornadoes, culminating in a spectacular fire tornado demonstration.
🎨 Day 3: Art Day
Creativity took center stage as we crafted our own playdough, sculpted masterpieces, and delved into soap-making and stone art. The day concluded with painting on canvas, showcasing our campers’ artistic talents.
🎭 Day 4: Theater and Modern Art
Our fourth day was all about the arts, with a focus on creativity in performance and visual expression. We made puppet socks, explored the magic of color frequencies, and performed a shadow theater play. We were honored to have the Minister for Labor and Social Work visit our scholars, offering a fantastic opportunity for them to present what they had learned and created!
🌌 Day 5: Solar System
Our final day was dedicated to space exploration. We learned about the solar system, created our own planets, and designed astronaut gear. To top it all off, we even practiced some astronaut yoga! The week culminated in a certificate award ceremony to celebrate the incredible achievements of all our campers.
